What IPTV is and how it works
What IPTV stands for
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. The name describes the delivery method, not the content: picture and sound travel over the same network you use to browse, send email or make video calls.
The key difference from traditional television is that there is no radio signal broadcast to everyone at once. Each device requests the data it needs and the server sends it to that specific connection.
How it works, step by step
The signal's journey from source to screen has four stages:
- Encoding: the video is compressed with codecs such as H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) so it takes up far less data with no visible loss of quality.
- Distribution: servers split the stream into segments a few seconds long and serve them over the internet.
- Transport: your router receives those segments like any other data traffic, over Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Playback: a player app downloads segments ahead of time (the buffer), decodes them and shows them in order, seamlessly.
Live TV, programme guide and on-demand
An IPTV service usually offers three kinds of content. Live channels play in real time. The electronic programme guide (EPG) shows what is on now and what comes next. On-demand content (VOD) plays whenever you like, with pause and fast-forward.
All of it reaches the app through a playlist: an M3U file or a connection via the Xtream Codes API, which organise the content into categories.
What you need to watch IPTV
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Internet connection | Carries the video; 10 Mbps or more, stable, for HD |
| Compatible device | Smart TV, Android TV, Fire TV Stick, phone, tablet or computer |
| IPTV player app | Reads the playlist, shows the guide and plays the video |
| Login details | Username, password and server URL, or an M3U link |
Technical advantages over traditional broadcasting
The trade-off is that the experience depends on your home network. If the connection is unstable or the Wi-Fi signal is weak in the living room, you will notice buffering or drops in quality.
- No aerial, satellite dish or cable installation required.
- The same service works across several types of device.
- You get the programme guide and on-demand content in the same app.
- Quality adapts to your connection: SD, HD or 4K depending on available bandwidth.
